You’ll often find some of my favorite decorating and design resources listed in my personal “reading list,” serving as endless wells of inspiration. Today, I’m thrilled to open up our home and share a collection of our own before-and-after photos, alongside some of the design inspiration that has guided our renovation process. Get ready to dive into the heart of our home and explore the transformations that have brought our vision to life.

The Heart of Our Home: A Kitchen Transformation Journey

I wholeheartedly believe the kitchen serves as the undisputed heart of any home. It’s more than just a place to prepare meals; it’s a vibrant hub where life unfolds. During gatherings, friends and family instinctively gravitate towards its warmth and energy. It’s where I dedicate countless hours each day, crafting nourishing breakfasts, lunches, and dinners, along with endless snacks for my family. This is also the cherished space where I roll out cookie dough, often with the joyful assistance of a curly-haired three-year-old, creating memories as sweet as the treats themselves. Our kitchen has been a focal point for renovation, and the changes we’ve made have dramatically reshaped its character and functionality.

Our Kitchen Renovation: The ‘Before’ & ‘After’

When we first moved in, our kitchen had potential, but it was far from the bright, inviting space we envisioned. It was a classic case of dated aesthetics and inefficient design. However, with a clear vision and some strategic updates, we’ve managed to turn it into a space that truly reflects our style and meets our family’s needs. Here’s a detailed look at the significant steps we’ve taken to revitalize this crucial area:

  • Dramatic Flooring Upgrade: The most impactful and visually striking transformation came with the installation of new hardwood floors by Renga Interiors. Replacing the old, worn flooring immediately elevated the entire space, bringing warmth, elegance, and a sense of continuity throughout the main living areas. This decision laid the groundwork for the modern farmhouse aesthetic we aimed for.
  • Cabinetry Refresh with White Paint: Our existing cabinets, though sturdy, were clad in a dingy beige that absorbed light and made the kitchen feel smaller and less inviting. A fresh, crisp coat of white paint dramatically brightened the space, creating an airy and clean backdrop. This simple yet effective change made a monumental difference, instantly modernizing the kitchen without the expense of a full cabinet replacement.
  • Updated Hardware for a Polished Look: Details matter, and new hardware was essential to completing the refreshed cabinet look. We selected elegant pulls from Restoration Hardware, known for their timeless quality, and charming knobs from Capitol Hardware. These small additions provided a significant upgrade in both style and tactile experience, perfectly complementing the newly painted cabinets.
  • Modern Appliances for Efficiency: To enhance both aesthetics and functionality, we invested in new stainless steel appliances. A sleek trash compactor and a high-performance dishwasher, both from KitchenAid, were integrated into the design. These upgrades not only improved the kitchen’s efficiency but also contributed to its contemporary and polished appearance, making daily tasks much more enjoyable.

After the initial changes, still a work in progress.
Even with these significant improvements, our kitchen journey is far from over. We have a clear vision for further enhancements that will elevate its functionality and aesthetic appeal to the next level. Here are the dream projects still on our kitchen wish list:
  • Elegant White Marble Countertops: Replacing the existing countertops with luxurious white marble is at the top of our list. The timeless beauty and subtle veining of marble would introduce a sophisticated touch and a bright, reflective surface that we absolutely adore.
  • Classic Subway Tile Backsplash: To complement the white cabinets and future marble countertops, a clean and classic subway tile backsplash is planned. This choice offers a beautiful balance of simplicity and sophistication, enhancing the kitchen’s overall bright and airy feel.
  • A Statement Faucet and Farmhouse Sink: A new, high-quality faucet is a must. We’re envisioning a design that marries modern functionality with a touch of vintage charm, possibly a gooseneck style. Furthermore, installing a deep, inviting farmhouse sink would not only be practical for a busy family kitchen but would also dramatically enhance the rustic elegance of the space.
  • Open-Concept Dream: In my ultimate fantasy land of home design, I would love to knock out the wall where the refrigerator currently stands. This would allow the kitchen to flow almost seamlessly into the family room, with only a beautiful peninsula (originally envisioned as an island, but a peninsula works better with the layout) creating a natural, inviting separation. This architectural change would significantly open up the living space, making it even more conducive to entertaining and family interaction.

Kitchen Inspiration: Crafting Our Dream Space

Every design project benefits from a strong source of inspiration. For our kitchen, we’ve gathered a collection of images that perfectly encapsulate the aesthetic and functional goals we aspire to achieve. These spaces blend timeless elegance with practical design, showcasing elements we hope to incorporate into our own home.

This beautiful kitchen is from one of my absolute favorite home blogs, Honey We’re Home. Megan’s entire house perfectly aligns with my design sensibilities, and I truly enjoy watching her spaces evolve with such thoughtful touches and elegant solutions. Her kitchen, in particular, showcases a remarkable blend of comfort and style that resonates deeply with our own design philosophy.

Nora Walker’s inviting kitchen, as seen on the beloved show Brothers and Sisters. Its classic charm and functional elegance are truly captivating.
Christopher Peacock’s kitchen is a masterclass in elegant design. I absolutely adore that unexpected pop of orange in the window treatment, which injects vibrant personality into an otherwise classic space. In truth, I love every single element of this kitchen; it embodies a sophisticated yet livable aesthetic. The combination of pristine white cabinets contrasted with dark hardwood floors is particularly appealing to us – a design choice we consciously replicated in our own home, proving its timeless appeal and striking visual impact.
Ah, the coveted kitchen from the iconic movie Something’s Gotta Give. This kitchen is a perennial favorite, admired for its spaciousness, natural light, and sophisticated coastal aesthetic. It’s a testament to classic design that never goes out of style, and its serene ambiance is truly aspirational.
Following the footsteps of that cinematic marvel, here’s a beautiful Something’s Gotta Give copycat kitchen. It perfectly captures the essence of the original, demonstrating how its beloved elements can be successfully translated into real-world designs, proving the enduring appeal of its bright and open concept.
Lastly, Ina Garten’s kitchen, as famously featured in House Beautiful, stands as a paragon of design excellence. It rightly earned the prestigious “Kitchen of the Year” award from House Beautiful, and it’s easy to see why. This kitchen is simply gorgeous, a perfect blend of rustic charm and refined elegance. I particularly admire its incredibly open layout, which fosters a sense of spaciousness and welcome. The way it masterfully combines rustic elements with sophisticated touches creates an atmosphere that is both grounded and exquisitely polished, truly making it an inspiring blueprint for our own design aspirations.

A Functional Gem: The Kitchen Desk Makeover

Adjacent to our main kitchen area, we have a dedicated kitchen desk space that, while practical, was desperately in need of a design refresh. This nook serves as our family’s command center – a place for quick notes, recipe look-ups, and managing household logistics. We transformed it from an overlooked corner into a beautifully integrated and highly functional part of the kitchen, demonstrating how even small areas can make a big impact.

The stunning transformation of our kitchen desk.

Here’s a breakdown of the key elements that brought this small but mighty space to life:

  • Crisp White Cabinets: Similar to the main kitchen, the cabinets of the desk area received a fresh coat of luminous white paint. This immediately brightened the space and created a cohesive look with the rest of the kitchen’s aesthetic. The white finish serves as a perfect canvas for the other luxurious elements we introduced.
  • Elegant Hardware: Elevating the cabinetry further, we installed stylish cup pulls and exquisite crystal knobs, both sourced from Restoration Hardware. These pieces add a touch of refined elegance and a hint of sparkle, transforming simple storage into a sophisticated design feature.
  • Luxurious Calacatta Gold Marble Slab: The crowning glory of the kitchen desk is undoubtedly the Calacatta Gold Marble slab. I was incredibly fortunate to find this exquisite piece as a remnant at Century Stone. This was a fantastic find, allowing us to incorporate high-end material at a more accessible price point. Now, just imagine this level of beauty carried throughout the entire kitchen! Calacatta Gold is renowned for its striking white background interwoven with dramatic veins of grey and, most notably, stunning flecks of gold. It’s an absolutely gorgeous stone, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. However, a word of caution: if you are someone who obsesses over keeping your countertops in absolutely pristine condition, white marble does stain relatively easily. But if you embrace a European philosophy – viewing stains and imperfections not as flaws, but as charming signs of a well-lived and loved life – then absolutely go for it. I often recall the delightful story of Meg Ryan rubbing tomatoes into her new white marble kitchen in a movie, deliberately embracing the patina. This perspective allows you to truly enjoy the organic beauty of the stone without undue stress.

Small Space, Big Impact: The Powder Room Makeover

Our powder room, often a forgotten corner in many homes, presented one of our most dramatic before-and-after transformations. This small space required a complete overhaul to shed its dreadful previous state and emerge as a stylish, functional area for guests. It’s a testament to how even the smallest rooms can make a significant design statement with thoughtful planning and execution.

The powder room in its original, somewhat chaotic, state before the full transformation.
The beautifully refreshed and inviting powder room after its dramatic makeover.

This powder room was, quite frankly, horrendous when we started. The sink had already been ripped out when I snapped the “before” photo, but believe me when I say the original sink was perched atop a bulky, boxy cabinet that devoured precious space, making the already tiny room feel even more cramped and perpetually dark. And the brown toilet? It had to go. Immediately. Our goal was to completely revamp this room on a budget, and the resulting change was nothing short of dramatic, proving that thoughtful design doesn’t always require a hefty price tag.

Here’s how we achieved such a striking transformation without breaking the bank:

  • Refreshing Wall Color: We painted the walls in Sherwin Williams Agreeable Grey, a wonderfully versatile and calming shade. This choice instantly brightened the room, making it feel more spacious and modern, and provided a sophisticated neutral backdrop for the new fixtures.
  • New Fixtures for Form and Function: To maximize space and improve aesthetics, we replaced the old fixtures with a new toilet and a sleek pedestal sink, both sourced affordably from Home Depot. The pedestal sink, in particular, was a game-changer, opening up the floor space and creating an illusion of greater roominess.
  • Budget-Friendly Faucet: For the faucet, we found a beautiful goose-neck style on Amazon that perfectly mimics the high-end look of a Restoration Hardware piece, but at a mere fraction of the price. This smart swap allowed us to achieve a luxurious feel without the premium cost, proving that savvy shopping can yield impressive results.
  • Stylish Accessories: Completing the look, we added a chic glass ledge over the toilet for displaying small decorative items and practical storage. New hardware, picked up during a Pottery Barn sale, provided the finishing touches, adding polish and coherence to the newly transformed space. These details elevate the room, making it feel thoughtfully designed and complete.

What’s Next? Our Future Home Design Plans

The journey of making a house a home is truly never-ending, and we’re constantly looking ahead to our next exciting project. Our most recent endeavor involved painting the master bedroom in the serene and sophisticated shade of Silver Sage from Restoration Hardware. We absolutely adore the tranquil ambiance it creates – it’s a color that changes beautifully with the light, offering a calming retreat at the end of each day. Currently, we are immersed in the delightful, yet surprisingly challenging, process of deciding on drapery fabrics for this newly painted sanctuary. Choosing the perfect drapery, we’ve discovered, can be as complex and nuanced as selecting the perfect shade of white paint – a task that is, by no means, simple! The myriad of textures, patterns, and light-filtering properties makes for a truly intricate decision. Beyond the master bedroom, our minds are buzzing with ideas for other areas of the house. We’re contemplating refreshing our living room with new soft furnishings and possibly a gallery wall, and dreaming about landscaping improvements to enhance our outdoor living spaces. Each step, no matter how small, brings us closer to our vision of a perfectly curated and deeply loved home. Stay tuned for more transformations!
