Embarking on Our Dream Kitchen Transformation: A Journey to an Open White Space
After years of envisioning, meticulous planning, and diligent saving, the moment has finally arrived! Our long-awaited kitchen renovation is officially underway, marking the beginning of a truly transformative journey for our home. The excitement is palpable as we embark on creating an open, bright white kitchen – a space we eagerly anticipate sharing with cherished family and friends. This isn’t just a remodel; it’s the realization of a dream, a fundamental shift in how we live and connect within our home.
If my presence on the blog has seemed a little quieter than usual, it’s for this incredibly compelling reason. I am beyond thrilled to pull back the curtain and share every detail of what we’ve been up to behind the scenes. The changes happening are significant, promising a complete overhaul of one of the most central spaces in our house. In the meantime, our temporary culinary headquarters consist of a toaster oven, a trusty slow cooker, and a Vitamix, all nestled in the laundry room, complemented by our outdoor grill. It’s an arrangement that is certainly challenging my creative cooking skills! And, to add a dash of domestic reality, after packing today’s lunch, I can confirm that our laundry room now distinctly smells of fish sticks – a small price to pay for progress, perhaps.
Our Kitchen’s Evolution: From Past to Present and Beyond
Let’s take a look back to understand just how far this space has come, and where it’s headed. The image above captures our kitchen precisely as it appeared when we first purchased our home about five years ago. It was a functional space, but one that certainly had room for aesthetic and practical improvements to align with our family’s lifestyle and design preferences. We knew from the outset that this kitchen held immense potential, envisioning a future where it would be the heart and soul of our home.
Even before fully settling in, we undertook some immediate, impactful changes. We replaced the original tile and white carpet – yes, white carpet in a kitchen-adjacent area! – with beautiful, warm wood flooring throughout the main living spaces. This instantly elevated the look and feel, creating a more cohesive and sophisticated foundation. My dad and I then rolled up our sleeves and gave the existing cabinets a fresh, crisp coat of white paint. It’s amazing what a difference paint can make, brightening the entire room and setting a clean, inviting tone. To complete this initial refresh, we added some elegant “kitchen jewelry” – stylish pulls and knobs sourced from Restoration Hardware, which lent a touch of classic charm. Functionality was also a priority, so we upgraded the dishwasher and replaced the old trash compactor. These initial improvements alone made a significant difference, don’t you agree? They laid the groundwork for what was to come, transforming a dated space into something much more appealing and functional for daily life.
The Dream Takes Shape: Expert Design and Trusted Professionals
With the initial phase complete and our vision starting to crystallize, it was time to move on to the more extensive dreaming and planning. This is where the magic truly began. We were incredibly fortunate to enlist the expertise of our good friend, John, from Eleven Modern. John is an absolutely fabulous architect whose talent for spatial design and aesthetic sensibility is truly remarkable. He meticulously designed a brand new layout for our kitchen, one that expertly balances both functionality and breathtaking beauty. His plans addressed all our pain points, from improving workflow to maximizing natural light and creating seamless transitions between living areas. Seeing his initial sketches and renderings was an incredibly exciting moment, bringing our long-held dreams to life on paper.
With a brilliant design in hand, the next crucial step was finding the right team to execute it. We were thrilled to hire an awesome contractor, Below Magid Construction. The decision was an easy one, largely influenced by my mom’s fantastic experience working with them on her own gorgeous bathroom renovation. Their reputation for quality craftsmanship, attention to detail, and professional project management preceded them, giving us immense confidence as we moved into the construction phase. Partnering with professionals who understand and respect your vision, and who you can trust implicitly, is paramount in any home renovation project, and we feel incredibly lucky to have found such a team.

Breaking Down Walls for Connection: The Allure of an Open Kitchen Island
One of the primary motivations behind this extensive renovation stemmed from a fundamental issue with our previous kitchen layout: its separation from the rest of the living areas in the house. This isolated design created a persistent challenge, especially with young children. Our kids often wanted to play in the family room, but from the confines of the kitchen, I simply couldn’t see them. With babies and toddlers, this meant constant worry – I was perpetually concerned someone might choke or get into mischief while I was busy cooking, cleaning, or washing dishes. The need to constantly run back and forth to check on my girls was exhausting and inefficient. It became abundantly clear that the wall separating the kitchen and family room had to go.
In its place, a glorious island will stand! This isn’t just a counter; it’s the cornerstone of our new open-concept design, promising to revolutionize how our family interacts and how we entertain. I simply cannot wait for my kids and their friends to gather around, eating snacks, doing homework, and chatting at the bar. This island will foster connection, allowing me to be an active participant in family life even while preparing meals. It means being able to keep an eye on the little ones, engage in conversations, and truly be present. It will transform our home into a more cohesive, integrated, and joyful space, making everyday moments and special occasions alike more inclusive and effortless.
Life’s Beautiful Distractions: Welcoming Winston and Creative Fun
As if a major kitchen renovation wasn’t enough to keep us busy, we’ve also welcomed a new, furry family member into our home! Meet Winston, our adorable new puppy. He’s brought an incredible amount of joy, laughter, and, admittedly, a whole new level of “busy” to our household. We’ve been launched right back into the delightful world of potty training, which certainly adds another layer of activity to our already bustling schedule. It’s a wonderful reminder that life continues to unfold and surprise us, even amidst the chaos of renovation.
In a final creative flourish before the demolition crew arrived, my girls and I decided to have some unforgettable fun with the wall that was destined to disappear. We grabbed our paints and transformed the soon-to-be-removed wall into a vibrant canvas. The sheer delight on their faces when they woke up the next morning to discover I had painted a playful sea turtle was absolutely priceless. It was such a joyous and memorable activity, a way to say a creative goodbye to the old space. And honestly, I loved the result so much that it’s sparked a new idea: I now want to paint murals in their rooms! These little moments of creativity and connection make the entire renovation process even more special, imbuing our home with personal touches and treasured memories.
Demolition Day: Embracing the Future
Then came the big day: demolition. Seeing that wall come down, the very barrier that had defined our kitchen’s isolation, was incredibly satisfying. Bye bye wall! It felt like a symbolic shedding of the old, making way for boundless new possibilities. While demo day often looks like pure chaos, for us, it was the exciting first visible step in transforming our blueprint into a tangible reality. The open space that emerged, even amidst dust and debris, immediately felt lighter, more expansive, and full of promise. It allowed us to truly visualize the flow of our future open-concept kitchen and reinforced our excitement for the finished project.
Curating Our Aesthetic: An Inspiration Board for a Dream Kitchen
To help guide our design choices and maintain a cohesive vision, I’ve curated a little inspiration board for our new kitchen. The aesthetic we’re aiming for is dreamy, bright, and inviting, characterized by lots of soothing neutrals with a distinct touch of European charm. We want the space to feel timeless and elegant, yet still warm and welcoming for our family and guests. Every element is being chosen with careful consideration to contribute to this overall ambiance.
So far, we’ve already secured some key pieces that perfectly align with this vision. We have these gorgeous French Bistro stools from World Market, which will provide stylish and comfortable seating at our new island. The heart of any kitchen, the sink, will be a classic white farmhouse sink – a timeless choice that evokes rustic elegance. Complementing this, we’ve selected an exquisite English bridge faucet, adding a touch of vintage sophistication. And for the ultimate culinary experience, a double range will be installed, offering both functionality and a professional-grade aesthetic. We’re carefully considering everything from lighting fixtures to backsplashes and cabinet hardware to ensure every detail contributes to our desired European-inspired, bright, and neutral haven.
For those who love visual inspiration as much as I do, I’m constantly pinning a plethora of gorgeous kitchens on Pinterest. If you’re looking for more ideas or want to dive deeper into the aesthetics that are guiding our renovation, I invite you to visit my profile.
