New York City’s Magical Christmas for Kids

Experience the Magic: New York City at Christmas with Kids

New York City at Christmastime is an unparalleled spectacle, transforming into a vibrant wonderland that captures the hearts of visitors, especially families. Imagine sparkling lights, festive window displays, exhilarating ice skating, and delicious holiday treats – a dream destination for making cherished memories. Our recent girls’ trip, a wonderful surprise from my mum, proved that the Big Apple truly knows how to celebrate the holiday season in style. From iconic landmarks adorned with festive decorations to hidden gems offering unique cultural experiences, NYC pulsates with an energetic, sparkly, and utterly magical atmosphere that resembles the charm of my favorite European cities, yet with its own distinctive metropolitan flair.

New York City in December is a sensory feast. The city hums with life, a beautiful symphony of bustling streets, diverse cultures, and architectural marvels. Everywhere you look, hotels sparkle with magnificent Christmas trees, intricate wreaths, and dazzling light installations. It’s a fast-paced, sometimes crowded, and undoubtedly expensive experience, but every moment is infused with beauty and excitement. Unlike the laid-back vibe of California, New Yorkers carry a sophisticated elegance – dapper gentlemen and not a flip-flop in sight – which adds to the city’s unique charm. This guide is crafted to help you navigate the holiday splendor of NYC, offering ideas that are perfect for families traveling with children, but equally enchanting for adults seeking a festive escape.

Visiting New York City during the holidays is truly a bucket-list adventure for many. Whether it’s your first time or a cherished annual tradition, the city never fails to deliver a breathtaking experience. This curated guide will help you discover the best of NYC’s holiday offerings, ensuring a memorable trip for all ages.

Enchanting Window Displays: A Visual Spectacle

One of the most iconic and accessible holiday activities in New York City is admiring the department store window displays. These aren’t just storefronts; they are elaborate, intricate works of art that tell whimsical stories and transport onlookers into magical worlds. Whether you stroll along Fifth Avenue during the day or evening, the fancy shops pull out all the stops to create incredible, captivating scenes. Saks Fifth Avenue, for instance, often features breathtaking themes, like the enchanting ice princess window we marveled at. Each display is a testament to immense creativity and craftsmanship, drawing crowds of delighted spectators, young and old.

Beyond the individual window narratives, Saks Fifth Avenue offers an incredible light show that blankets its entire façade. This synchronized display of lights, set to festive music, is so spectacular it could easily rival a show at a major theme park like Disneyland. It’s a mesmerizing experience that truly elevates the holiday atmosphere on Fifth Avenue, making it a must-see spectacle that you won’t want to miss. Plan to arrive a bit early to secure a good viewing spot, especially if you’re with little ones who’ll want an unobstructed view.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral: A Serene Sanctuary

Amidst the dazzling lights and bustling crowds, a visit to St. Patrick’s Cathedral offers a moment of peaceful reflection. This magnificent Gothic Revival church, which first opened its doors in 1858, stands as a prominent landmark and a serene sanctuary in the heart of Midtown Manhattan. Stepping inside, you’re greeted by soaring arches, stunning stained-glass windows, and a calming hush that provides a welcome respite from the holiday frenzy outside. It’s an architectural marvel that captivates both adults and children, offering a glimpse into history and a quiet space for contemplation. Even if you’re not religious, the sheer grandeur of the cathedral is an awe-inspiring sight during the festive season, with its Christmas decorations adding to its inherent beauty.

Rockefeller Center: The Heart of NYC’s Christmas Spirit

Directly across from St. Patrick’s Cathedral lies the iconic Rockefeller Center, an absolute must-visit during the holiday season. Home to the world-famous Christmas tree, an enormous evergreen adorned with countless lights and flanked by the glistening angel sculptures, it’s truly the epitome of Christmas in NYC. The scale and brilliance of the tree are simply breathtaking, serving as a magical backdrop for holiday photos and memories. The atmosphere here is electric, filled with cheer and wonder. For an unparalleled panoramic view of the city, especially stunning at dusk, take the elevator up to the Top of the Rock observation deck. From this vantage point, you can appreciate the sprawling urban landscape, Central Park, and the distant Statue of Liberty, all shimmering with holiday lights.

Glide into the Holidays: Ice Skating in NYC

Rockefeller Center isn’t just about the tree; it’s also home to an array of shops, delightful eateries, and of course, The Rink at Rockefeller Center. While this iconic ice rink is incredibly popular and tends to get very crowded, especially during peak holiday hours, it offers an unforgettable experience of skating beneath the towering Christmas tree. My girls, accustomed to indoor rinks back home, were particularly enchanted by the idea of outdoor skating in such a magnificent setting. Even if you choose not to skate here due to the crowds, simply watching others glide across the ice, with the festive music and twinkling lights, is an experience in itself.

Bryant Park Winter Village: A European Christmas Market Experience

Just a short walk from the grandeur of Rockefeller Center, Bryant Park undergoes a magical transformation into a charming Winter Village during the holidays. The ice rink here, nestled beautifully amidst the towering skyscrapers, offers another fantastic outdoor skating option. However, be prepared for crowds, especially on a surprisingly warm December Sunday like the one we experienced! Despite the bustling atmosphere, the setting is absolutely beautiful, making it a wonderful spot for both seasoned skaters and beginners. It’s an ideal place for families to spend a few hours, even if just to soak in the festive ambiance. The rink at Bryant Park is often free to use if you bring your own skates, though rental fees apply.

After a spin on the ice, or even just a contemplative watch, take your time to wander through the renowned Bryant Park Winter Village. This bustling market is a delightful labyrinth of over 125 boutique vendors, offering everything from fresh, savory crepes and warming vegan soups to unique kids’ toys, artisanal housewares, and exquisite handcrafted jewelry. The village exudes the authentic charm of traditional European Christmas markets, creating a festive shopping experience unlike any other. It’s a perfect place to find unique holiday gifts, savor seasonal treats, and simply revel in the joyful spirit of the holidays.

A highlight for the younger visitors (and young at heart!) is a ride on the Bryant Park carousel. It’s a gentle, slow-paced ride that offers a moment of classic amusement. During our visit, a magic show was also taking place nearby, adding an extra layer of enchantment to the already vibrant park. The combination of ice skating, unique shopping, delicious food, and delightful entertainment makes Bryant Park Winter Village a comprehensive and enjoyable holiday destination for the entire family.

Central Park: Nature’s Playground in the City

For a different ice skating experience, head to Central Park. The Wollman Rink, nestled within the picturesque landscape of the park, was notably less crowded than its Midtown counterparts during our visit. The charm of skating with the city skyline in the background, surrounded by trees, is truly special. However, sometimes the simple joys outweigh the planned activities! We found ourselves completely engrossed in playing amongst the vibrant autumn leaves (a delightful novelty for us Californians), doing cartwheels on the open lawns, and even some impromptu rock climbing on the park’s natural formations. We also enjoyed admiring the many adorable dogs out for their walks, adding to the park’s lively yet serene atmosphere. Despite envisioning a chilly, perhaps even a white Christmas visit, we were treated to an unseasonably warm 65+ degree weather, which made outdoor play all the more enjoyable. Central Park offers a refreshing escape and a vast natural playground where kids can simply be kids, even amidst the holiday grandeur of the city.

What to do with kids in NYC

While our trip included many “fancy” New York City experiences, we learned that sometimes, kids just want to explore, climb, and play freely. Central Park provides that perfect balance, allowing them to burn off energy and connect with nature. The unexpected warm weather was a pleasant surprise, turning our planned winter wonderland visit into a delightful autumn-meets-winter adventure. It proved that even without snow, New York City in December offers endless opportunities for outdoor fun and discovery.

Bergdorf Goodman Christmas Window Display 2015

Continuing the journey of marveling at holiday window displays, Bergdorf Goodman stands out with its truly jaw-dropping creations. This year, their displays were an astonishing spectacle, featuring over 7 million Swarovski Crystals that shimmered and sparkled under the city lights. While I knew New York City’s holiday windows were impressive, I had no idea they reached this extraordinary level of detail and artistry. They are undeniably true works of art, each scene meticulously crafted with incredible precision. The Neptune scene, with its magnificent sea turtle and dazzling underwater elements, was particularly captivating and became my personal favorite. The longer you gaze, the more intricate details you discover, revealing layers of creativity that seem to go on and on.

These windows are more than just a feast for the eyes; they are an experience, inviting you to slow down and immerse yourself in the imaginative worlds created behind the glass. Every tiny element contributes to a grand narrative, making each display a masterpiece of holiday cheer and artistic expression. It’s a tradition that truly defines the festive season in New York.

Kids tea in NYC

A Delightful Diversion: Afternoon Tea

Just around the corner from Bergdorf Goodman, you’ll find the iconic Plaza Hotel, a landmark familiar to many from children’s books and movies featuring the mischievous Eloise, as well as classic films like Home Alone 2. The spirit of Eloise is wonderfully woven throughout the hotel, adding a whimsical touch to its grandeur. For a truly special and memorable treat, we took the girls to an Eloise-themed high tea in the elegant Palm Court. It was, as Eloise would say, “rawther fancy,” and the sheer amount of delectable treats was “rawther ridiculous,” but it was an absolutely delightful and unique experience for the kids. While certainly a splurge, it’s a perfect one-time indulgence for a magical holiday memory. For other excellent tea options, friends also highly recommend Alice’s Tea Cup, known for its charming and imaginative atmosphere.

The Rockettes Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall

One of the ultimate holiday traditions in New York City, and a particular highlight my mum wanted to share with the girls, was the legendary Rockettes Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall. This iconic show is far more than just perfectly synchronized dancing and high kicks; it’s a multi-sensory experience that defines holiday entertainment in the city. From dazzling 3-D video segments that bring the stage to life to a heartwarming nativity scene featuring live camels and sheep, the production is truly spectacular.

The show incorporates kid-friendly story lines and a mix of traditional and modern holiday numbers, ensuring there’s something to captivate every member of the family. The precision and energy of the Rockettes are simply mesmerizing, especially during their famous “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” number. Seeing the Rockettes perform is an absolute must-do when visiting New York during the holiday season, offering an enchanting blend of grandeur, tradition, and pure Christmas joy that will leave you with lasting memories.

Accommodation & Culinary Delights: Making the Most of Your Stay

During our warm and incredibly busy holiday weekend, we were immensely grateful that almost everything we wanted to experience was within easy walking distance of our hotel. This was particularly crucial when traveling with kids who might not be keen on trekking miles through the city. Our single attempt to take a taxi to dinner highlighted the wisdom of our accommodation choice; a two-mile journey through gridlock traffic took about 30 frustrating minutes, emphasizing that a central, walkable location is key to a stress-free family trip.

While navigating traffic can be challenging, we found that the effort was entirely worth it for a meal at Rubirosa in the East Village. Their thin-crust pizza and crispy Brussels sprouts are absolutely divine and a true New York culinary highlight. A classic pizza night is, without a doubt, a mandatory experience when visiting NYC. We were also thankful for my mum’s excellent planning in choosing the Hotel Elysee, a small, charming boutique hotel not situated in a major tourist hotspot. This provided a calmer oasis amidst the city’s festive hustle. The Hotel Elysee offered a delightful complimentary breakfast every morning and a relaxing wine and cheese reception in the evenings, which was a perfect way to unwind. Mum and I certainly appreciated a glass or three of bubbly at the end of a frenetic New York City day, enjoying the festive street views from our window. Choosing accommodation wisely, focusing on both comfort and proximity to key attractions, can significantly enhance your family’s holiday experience in the Big Apple.

New York City at Christmastime is a truly unforgettable destination for families. From the sparkling window displays and iconic landmarks to the joyful ice skating rinks and delicious culinary adventures, the city offers a tapestry of experiences that will create cherished holiday memories for years to come. Until next time, NYC, thank you for the magic!
